To Bot or Not to Bot

In class, I spoke about methods botmasters use to 'constrain' user action. Constraints are used in all forms of interaction, some identical to those used by botmasters. Given your intuitive knowledge about constraints, give examples or imagine examples of the following:

* Giving the user a role to play (eg: searching for info or fighter);
* Script scenes in which the user knows what to say or do (eg: a salesperson bot, a typing interface);
* Providing incorrect or failed interaction messages (eg: subserviant chicken wagging wing);
* Narrowing interaction with a context, a theme (eg: Saucy Jacky accepts conversation about Jack the Ripper).

You can chat with bots here. Also, if you want to script dialogue with a bot you can use the free bot hosting service, Pandorabots. The service provides a GUI interface to the Alicebot program.

Also, for help with your projects, here is the link to the Interactive Entertainment Software Guide Wiki; the Contagious Media Showdown that Jeremy and Danielle may find itneresting; and the interactive work that seeks to inform others of Eastern rituals that Sararon may find interesting too. The bibliographic resources , too, are at the subject website.

i've checked out most of the chat bots, and some of them are quite good... but the majority don't seem to be able to recall in the right context questions only one previous... this get confusing, and the bots seem to counter this by repeating what you say in another way... i find these really interesting anyway, and it'll be quite exciting to see what comes in the future...

Good point. Keeping track of conversations is a big issue. It is interesting that the interactive fiction (IF) piece, 'Galatea by Emily Short, is a conversation with a character that does remember what is said.

Great to see you checked out a few bots too! And yes, the future will be interesting. Incidently, I just posted about the history of bots on one of my blogs.
